Two students who were killed in Saturday’s violent attack in Providence had tributes paid to them on Monday – while an intensive search for their killer continued following the release by local law enforcement of the sole person of interest in the case.
Ella Cook, a sophomore from Alabama, was called “an amazing, stable, pious, radiant soul”, according to the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which paid tribute to her at a gathering on Sunday.
Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s chapter of College Republicans of America, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also posted words of sorrow online, remarking: “There are no words. Keeping in mind her family and friends, particularly her mother and father.”
The other deceased individual was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, a citizen of Uzbekistan in his first year of studies at the renowned school, his family confirmed.
The victim's identification was confirmed by Uzbekistan’s foreign ministry.
“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and assisting patients,” his sibling Samira said in a memorial statement.
Nine other people were injured in the weekend shooting in the engineering building of Brown’s grounds in Providence, during the institution's end-of-term tests.
Law enforcement reported on Sunday evening that a 24-year-old male taken into custody in a raid at a Hampton Inn about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was being released.
“A perpetrator remains free,” declared Rhode Island’s attorney general, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you must reassess and pursue a different angle, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, admitted: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our community”.
The gunman opened fire inside a room in the building on over the weekend, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a authority reported to the media outlet.
Law enforcement that searched the lodging found a pair of pistols and two loaded 30-round magazines when the individual was arrested, the news agency reported.
Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was allowed to go home, stated the university president, Christina Paxson. Seven others were in critical but stable condition, and one remained in critical care, police said on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a private K-12 school in North Carolina, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “Her presence was a wonderful, steady, pious glow not only during her upbringing... but at Brown University she was a shining example in that institution as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, released remarks from the organization. “She was famed for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and peers,” he said.
The US ambassador, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, friends, and schoolmates and mourn the loss of his potential.”
Saturday’s killings at Brown, the country's seventh most historic university with about 7,300 undergraduate and postgraduate students, happened during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings recorded nationally so far in 2025, according to records. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
