Exactly 30 years since the first Toy Story film debuted, establishing Pixar as a major film company and bringing viewers to iconic figures like the cowboy doll (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.
In 2026, the next chapter is set to arrive. The first teaser trailer for Toy Story 5 landed this week, providing a glimpse into the plot but leaving viewers curious how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.
In the teaser shows Bonnie — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest plaything, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her initial digital gadget, and she is thrilled about it.
Presumably, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like the rest of her playthings. However, the characters seem to view it as a danger coming to replace them, which it likely will.
An element the teaser avoids is what Woody is returned with his friends in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items locate loving owners.
Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting unexpectedly is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether Bo Peep will have returned with Woody. And what about the stuntman toy (the star)?
At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.
It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the toys.
