The 2026 Formula 1 cars are expected to be lighter, more agile and sustainable compared to current models.

Formula 1 has revealed the official language that will be used to describe the intricate details of its upcoming 2026 rulebook.

The racing series is embarking on what is considered the biggest regulation change in its long history for the 2026 campaign, featuring fresh chassis and power unit regulations and the required adoption of fully sustainable fuels.

The new power units, which keep the 1.6-litre V6 configuration, boast a significantly increased battery power, driving key advancements in the aero packages.

During grand prix events, competitors will carefully oversee electrical energy – sometimes even hot laps – to achieve the best lap time.

Extensive fan consultation were carried out with a wide range of fans, including new, casual and core fans, to understand which terminology would make things clearer of the key features of the upcoming rules.

The stated goal was to present a range of advanced new areas of the competition as accessible as possible for the widest audience.

Consequently, initial designations for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in preference for straightforward terms that clearly indicate the real-world effect of the innovation.

Exploring the New Tech

According to rule-makers that competitors will have more power to determine tactics regarding power usage, harvesting, and efficiency.

The 2026 rules introduce a range of settings that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to improve the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

  • Passing Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a burst of extra electrical energy available when a car is less than a second the leading car to facilitate an pass.
  • Power Mode: This is a driver-operated power boost from the hybrid system that can be utilized during offensive or defensive moves. It delivers the driver full engine and battery energy at the activation of a control.

2026 Car Specifications

The vehicles for the new era will be reduced in size and weight than this year, with a distance between axles shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, car width cut by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is projected to decrease by approximately 15-30%, although constructors will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The vehicles will utilize active aerodynamics – front and rear wings will adjust on the straights to cut resistance and enhance velocity and revert into place for maximum cornering performance.

Wheels will retain 18-inch wheel rims, but the rubber compounds will be narrower, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and three centimetres on the rear.

2026 Engine Regulations

The new power units will have an near-equal balance in horsepower generated by the ICE and the battery and motor, a rise from about 20% battery contribution in the current formula.

The hybrid system is streamlined through the deletion of the complex turbo energy recovery device, the complicated and costly unit that recovered energy from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be mandated to operate on fully sustainable fuel, manufactured from organic sources or lab-created processes.
