Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democratic figures in images, while different voices lamented how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole
Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a delicate legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the redaction procedure.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and likeness appear in some of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be hidden behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased transparency.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously fails to adhere to both the intent and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Conservative Commentators Swing Behind the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are entirely censored, and many of the individuals shown in photographs have their identities obscured.
But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of the former president, in particular, enabled some conservative figures to launch the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left wrongly accused Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The White House has not been hiding those documents for months only to dump them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal forever. So they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the statement added.
Overall Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively subdued following the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that came before the congressional vote to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
The commentator, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi specifically after a group of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained little new information.
